What camera filter should i use in bright weather?
hey folks, heading out to china and wonder what filter would serve my shots well. i've heard that UV filters are pretty redundant nowadays....should i be looking at polarizing filters?

You really only need two filters: a UV/Haze filter and a Circular Polarizer.
The UV/Haze filter is more for protection of the front element of your lens although it can help with hazy conditions.
The circular polarizer is used to darken a blue sky and to remove glare/reflections from glass, water, snow, sand and painted metal - but not polished metal.
Do NOT waste your money on cheap, no-name filters. Buy quality: Heliopan, B+W, Hoya, Singh-Ray, Tiffen.
I also recommend taking a good tripod. You'll need it for landscapes and night city scenes. Benro ( http://www.benro.com ) offers the "Travel Angel" series of tripods which should suit your needs.
For the best results:
1) Shoot at your camera's highest resolution.
2) Use ISO 100.
3) Use a tripod whenever possible.
4) Use a remote or your camera's self-timer to release the shutter.
5) Use f5.6 or f8 or f11 since lenses are designed to perform best at these apertures.
Take plenty of Memory Cards and a couple of spare batteries. Make sure your Battery Charger is compatible with the Chines current (220 volt? 110 volt?).
