Sided Wide
On a three sided run in shed is it best to have the front wide open or have a partial opening?
It will face southeast and be 24 ft wide by 12ft deep. It will be the only shelter and we have cold winters.
To really get out of the wind a deeper shed is better, like 15 to 20 feet if you can do it. Mine is 36 feet wide, so I enclosed 10 feet at each end and left 16 feet of open entry, but I only have two horses sharing the shed. The horses are fed hay on rubber mats at each end, The mats stay dry because they are protected from rain and snow coming into the shed through the entry. With your shed being 24 feet wide, you could just enclose 8 feet at one end, leaving 16 feet of open entry.
I would determine which direction snow and rain are most likely to blow in from, and decide that way. You could even enclose only 4 feet at either end, just to give a blockade to wind whipping in at the north and south ends. If at all possible I would rethink the depth, since you have cold winters. Wind and snow can blow pretty far into the shed when we get major storms here. Ours is 16 feet deep, which is enough, but 20 feet would be better.
