Diffusion Filter
I have a Nikon d40 and have been taking portrait photographs and some landscapes would a diffusion filter help?
and if so, how much and what will it do? I already have a UV filter on it, and a Lens Hood as well.
NO NO NO
A diffusion filter is an effects filter and "softens" the image.
If you want to diffuse (soften) the image then do it post processing in an image editing programme rather than on camera.
There are filters that can "help" with landscapes main one for me would be a polariser. for others you are better of getting the Cokin (or similar) system, This is an attachment for the lens which you slip square filters in as required.
The filters you can experiment with are Neutral density which cut down light and allow longer exposures if required (running water for instance), Graduated ND, as the name suggests the "effect" graduates from full to clear and can be used to give more exposure to the sky.
Effects filters, try graduated coloured filters for the sky, tobacco is a good one for stormy skies.
Etc.
Basically any "effects" can be applied post processing these days and rather than potentially ruin a good shot by filtering it, wait and do it afterwards.
Edit. DL - sorry, gotta disagree with you - I agree that it is better to manipulate the light in most instances, but for "special effects" and diffusion is basically a special effect then it can be applied more effectively and selectively in post processing as can most "special" effects. Plus of course you have the option of reverting if it doesn't work.
Guess we will probably agree to differ though.
